How to get action with your staff reviews

usual becaus we run out of time and need to get back to the work place. How can I overcom this?

"Mi 1 to 1 session seem to just fizzl out at the end of each one."

Thi wa a great question that wa ask by a deleg dure a Manag Develop Programm we were run for them.

Let' take a look at some solutions....

Do the follow sound familiar to you?

You ar come to the end of your 1 to 1 meet or coach session with on of your direct reports. You have both talk a great game and discuss some realli worthwhil topic but time is now against you both and you need to come to a rapid close!

Now which of the follow happen to you?

"Ok DIRECT REPORT that wa a great session I will write an email of the action point and send them to you"

Or

that wa a great session,"Ok DIRECT REPORT. we'd better get back" [note, no close or follow up]

Or

DIRECT REPORT,"OK. let me summar what we have discussed, we have cover XYZ and ABC, you will do GHJ and I will do KLP"

you end up with on of the three scenario aboveNormal when a develop session come to a close..

Thei either:

1. Just come to an end with no summari of action point or who is do what

Or

2. You as the manag decid to get all of the action point down in an email to send them to your direct report

Or

3. You summar the meet of what wa discuss and take respons for commun the action points.

I recommend that you do not us ani of the above!!!!

If I had to choos it would be # 3 but instead here is what

I recommend that you do....

Firstli you should concentr more on the closur of a session than you have been doing. What is the point of a meet if you do not concentr on WHA T NEEDS to be done and WHEN rather than the WHY?

Leav yourself more time than the normal 5 minut you do at the moment to close the session.

if you ar run a 60 minut session you should start to wrap up at the 40 minut mark leav a good 20 minut for the closeA a gener rule of thumb..

So that' my first recommendation.

Mi second recommend is that to close you ask your direct report to summar the meet there and then and also ask them to document all of the action point and get them to send them TO YOU!

Here' why:

1. You ar make the direct report respons for the meet and the action points

2. You ar ensur that thei have understood and listen to what you were both saying

3. If you start to do thi dure everi session you will condit the direct report to pai closer attent to what is be said dure the meet becaus thei know thei will have to summar and send you the action point at the end of it!

4. It lighten your workload [yippi I hear you shout!]

5. It promot empower and share respons for the develop of the direct report.

6. You ar act as a leader rather than a note taker and backsid wiper! sorri about that last statement but I am sure you know where I am come from with it!
